Book Blitz | Sweet Liar (Candy #2) by Debra Doxer

Sweet Liar (Candy #2)

by Debra Doxer

Release Date 10/20/15

Summary from Goodreads:

Sometimes lies are sweeter than the truth.

Beauty is alluring; it can disguise the ugliness beneath. But scarred beauty is

even more potent to a girl who vowed never to let her heart be broken again. It

was an easy vow for Candy to keep until she met Jonah, an arrogant boy with a

face that would be too perfect if not for the scar that marred the skin beside

his eye.

That imperfect boy earned her trust and won her heart, but the ties that bind

people together are fragile, especially when lies are told. Trust is also

fragile, and once broken, doesn’t heal like a heart. Trust has to be earned

again, and Jonah desperately wants Candy’s trust back.

But Candy has more than Jonah to worry about. Her father is in trouble, and she

intends to help him whether he likes it or not. People tell her he’s a bad man,

and that may be true, but he’s not all bad. Deep down, she understands his

brand of badness because she’s so much like him.

When Candy finally learns the truth, she’ll have to grow up fast, let go of old

grievances, and realize that being vulnerable doesn’t make her weak. In fact,

opening herself up may be the very thing that makes her whole again.

Excerpt (3)

The portraits of the Rousseau family members aligning the walls of the grand hallway definitely served as testament to Kyran’s statement. Many looked so much alike they could pass for Kyran’s and Alexi’s twins—one particular woman being identical to them. It was scary how much they resembled their long since deceased family members.

I opened my eyes, turning my head slightly to the left to look up at him. “He suffered before he died.” Dorian was whipped until his back was red, oozing blood, and raw. The pain he was forced to undergo was still very fresh and vivid in my head.

“So goes the legend,” Kyran acknowledged. “He paid a hefty price in order to ensure his bloodline. I’d say it was well worth it.” He touched my cheek with the back of his free hand. His gaze locked on my face. “You wouldn’t be here otherwise.”

Was it worth it? What would Dorian say had he survived his ordeal? Would he have agreed with Kyran’s statement?

“I guess I will never know,” I murmured. In my dream, he had appeared resigned to his fate, but one cannot know for sure. He could’ve changed his mind. Or his outlook in life could have been different had he been alive today.

The past week had changed my perspective of life even more than the accident that almost cost me my life over a year ago. I guess one can say the whole incident with Santos had matured me all the way. I definitely didn’t feel like the same nineteen-year-old girl anymore.

“Marjorie.” Kyran’s features hardened a bit. “The man we spoke of earlier is here to see you.”

blurb (2)

Eight years ago, there was no World Government. There were no agents, no carts. The fear of a nosebleed did not exist. Then came The Affection—an incurable disease that ran rampant across the planet, killing off roughly 60% of the human population. Two years later—with order in shambles and governments all over the world in ruins—the World Government formed. That’s when the real trouble began. The WG made it its mission to segregate the sick (known as “Affected”) from the rest of the population in an attempt to keep the disease from spreading. Agents were put into place to corral the ill and the God-forsaken carts were introduced.

For the past six years, Ethan has lived a quiet life. He has done his best to remain out of the public eye and, more importantly, off of the agents’ radars. However, when his ex-girlfriend, daughter of the famous scientist who first discovered the disease, is captured by agents and taken to World Government headquarters to be experimented upon, Ethan can no longer pretend the world around him doesn’t exist. On his way to save her, Ethan is thrust into a place of turmoil, espionage and conspiracies. Will he be able to handle the pressures of reality? Will he be able to save her in time?

excerpt (2)

The agents lead the chef out of the restaurant. Things do not go back to normal so easily, not the way they did back at the ball game. Awash with the tragedy of the moment, people mourn the loss of the chef in different ways. Some leave, some bow their heads and others lose the battle to tears. The hostess gives a speech about the man the chef is. A round of clapping follows.

“This doesn’t make sense,” Grant says. “The chef was Affected. Doesn’t that mean he was serving Affected food? He could have made us all sick.”

“What’s your point?” I ask.

“My point is that those agents could easily take us all in for fear of contagion. What’s stopping them?”

Cameron’s card comes to mind—the one with the embossed gold lettering and three contact numbers. I sift through my wallet and pull it out.

“Me,” I say, staring at the card. “I’m stopping them.”

Excerpts

The office staff was friendly, in a distracted, frazzled way. I had a schedule in my hands and Diana told them she would show me around, so I was quickly dismissed. Just when I heaved a sigh of relief that I hadn’t seen the principal again, he rounded the corner of the hallway and spotted me. A grin broke out on his face and he called my name.
Everyone in the hallway turned and watched as he seized my hand and shook it. “How is the first day going so far?”
Forcing a smile, I answered, “Diana has decided to take me around, so things are going pretty well. Thanks.”I wished I would melt into the floor.
The secretary stuck her head out of the office door and motioned for him. I could have kissed her.
“Have a great day, Caroline. Tell your parents I said hello.”
“Sure thing,” I said. Right after I scrape my reputation off the floor.
Diana tugged my arm, pulling me to the locker they’d assigned me. I struggled with the lock while she leaned against the one next to me. “Where on earth did you meet him?”
“Right after we drove into town the other day. My Dad almost ran him over.” I said, yanking on the lock. The door swung open with a squeal.
Diana blinked. “Life with you isn’t boring, is it?”
A couple of kids snickered behind me. “I wish it was.”
Someone muttered something about being a pet behind me. Diana glared and the girl slunk away to another corner. I’d spent the last year trying not to be known as a teacher’s pet. Now I’d be known as a principal’s pet. Could life get any worse?
I should have known better than to ask that.

excerpt

“Stop moving or I’ll accidently put it in the wrong place,” I ordered Nik. You would think a guy who had done military conscription at home in Berlin, and stood at attention for long periods of time in all sorts of weather, could stand still for a few minutes.

“Sah-sha, is it even possible to put it in the wrong place?” he asked, with a raised eyebrow. I couldn’t help but smile—the way he said my name with his German accent always caught my attention; it started like sarsaparilla and finished like a dance.

Niklas Wagner, star midfielder for the national soccer team the Santa Ana Saints, had come to me for a suit adjustment—yep by day I was the media officer for the Saints and by night I designed; it was my hobby-cum-passion. Nik was standing in front of me wearing only the black suit pants and the jacket, no shirt—I could see all those well-developed abdominal muscles just waiting to be touched and I wouldn’t mind tracing those grooves with my tongue either, up and down, tight and tense. Is it getting hot in here? Then I accidently did what I had been threatening, jabbed him with a pin.

“Ouch,” he yelped and stepped back.

“See? What did I tell you? Stand at attention,” I barked.

He stiffened and stood straight… for about five seconds…

Blog Tour | A Reaper of Stone by Mark Gelineau and Joe King Excerpt + Giveaway!

A Reaper of Stone

Mark Gelineau and Joe King

GENRE: Fantasy
NOTE: This book is FREE on Amazon for 5 days beginning the date of the book blast.

BLURB:

A Lady is dead. Her noble line ended. And the King’s Reaper has come to reclaim her land and her home. In the marches of Aedaron, only one thing is for certain. All keeps of the old world must fall.

Elinor struggles to find her place in the new world. She once dreamed of great things. Of becoming a hero in the ways of the old world. But now she is a Reaper. And her duty is clear. Destroy the old. Herald the new.

Excerpt

The girl put a hand on his shoulder. Her voice was low. “Whatever happens next. You mustn’t move.”

And then the ground underneath the horse exploded upward and a pale white form the size of a wagon erupted into the air. The horse let out a scream that turned into a wet gurgle as white writhing tentacles enveloped the animal. The copper tang of blood filled the air and Conbert felt his stomach lurch.

He thought to go for the sword he carried at his side but he saw the girl’s eyes.

He held himself still as another of the creatures breached the drowning grass. It was a huge mass of rippling white flesh, except at the front where the mouth opened like an exposed wound. Massive tearing fangs lined the pink maw, and white tentacles writhed from the worm’s throat, seeking the remnants of the thrashing horse. The two monsters tore the horse apart in seconds, powerful tentacles flaying meat from bone with horrific efficiency.

As the rendworms began to slide across the ground in their direction, Con felt a terror urging him to run. He fought against it, trying to focus instead on the perfect stillness of the young girl. The huge worms slid past them.

And then as Con held his breath, the girl moved.

The young cadet was fast and sure as she darted forward. She struck out with the mace, swinging it with both hands, and smashing it into the rendworm’s side. There was a loud crack, and Con knew that somewhere inside the sinuous horror a bone had broken under the blow.
