Title: Between Love & Lies

Series: Gambling Hearts Book 1

Author: Jacqui Nelson

Genre: Western Historical Romance, 18+

Published:August 30, 2015

In a town ruled by sin, will he earn her love or her lies?

Dodge City—1877

Sadie Sullivan lost everything when a herd of longhorn cattle bound for Dodge City trampled and destroyed her farm. Now she works in Dodge—one of the most wicked and lawless towns in the West—at the Northern Star Saloon. But her survival in this new world of sin and violence depends on maintaining a lie so deadly it could end her life before the town of Dodge can.

The one man capable of unraveling all of Sadie’s secrets is Noah Ballantyne, the Texan rancher whose herd destroyed her home. Back in town and taking up the role of deputy alongside legendary lawman Bat Masterson, Noah vows he won’t leave until he’s made things right. But with the saloon’s madam unwilling to release Sadie and a rich cattle baron wanting her as well, the odds aren’t good for finding love…or leaving town alive.

South of Dodge City, Kansas—1876

They were destroying everything: the tiny apple tree she’d sheltered in the wagon during the long, sweltering journey from Virginia; the fence she’d devoted weeks to repairing over the winter with scraps of deadwood; the vegetable garden she’d sown during the first whisper of spring and painstakingly coaxed to life every heartbeat since.

All trampled, devoured, gone.

Sadie glared at the beasts, eyes burning with tears of hopeless rage. They were thin, ugly creatures, wielding heavy horns that stretched out of their skulls like spears. Texas longhorns, the Devil’s helpers. In the middle of them rode Lucifer himself, sent straight up from hell to torment her and tear away everything she’d slaved to build.

She tracked the long-legged, solid-built cowboy as he steered his horse through the milling animals, angling toward her and her father—and their sod house which, she realized with increasing dismay, was also in danger of being leveled by the heaving mass of cattle. The intruder, similar to all the other Texas drovers, was covered in a layer of trail dust so thick it hung on him like a second skin. But it was one of the only things he and the other men had in common.

While the rest hollered and cracked whips over the backs of the beasts in their charge—trying to persuade them to return to the trail—this man urged his charcoal-colored mount through the river of hide and horn, making a beeline for her.

His silence, along with his ability to guide his horse with remarkably little effort, infuriated her. As the distance between them shortened, unease crept up her spine. His gaze was unwavering, never leaving her.

She tightened her grip on the ancient shotgun clutched at her side, and concentrated on her anger and frustration, transferring them from the longhorns to settle solely on him. She did not want him to come any closer.

Yanking the shotgun up to her shoulder, she took aim.

The cowboy straightened in his saddle but otherwise did not acknowledge her hostile action. Nor did he slacken his pace; if anything, he bore down on her even faster.

Damn him to hell. Her finger tightened on the trigger.

Something slammed down on her shotgun, pitching the rusted barrel earthward. The buckshot tore a savage gouge out of the clay in front of her and kicked up a cloud of dust. The blast forced her to stumble back.

Her father’s red face inserted itself between her and the cowboy. With a curse, he jerked the weapon from her grasp.

As she stood gawking at him, the cattle, spooked by the shotgun blast, bolted—fast and in every direction. Her father sprinted toward their lone plow horse, scrambled onto its back and galloped away from the cattle and her.

She shouldn’t have expected anything different. Still the hurt came. Sharp and deep. Once again he’d thought only of himself. He’d abandoned her in the center of the herd, alone and defenseless.

I’m going to be trampled, she realized. I’m going to die.

*** PUBLISHER’S ALERT: MATURE CONTENT WARNING ***

Recommended for ages 16+. Includes scenes that depict drug use, teen sex, and sexual assault.

This book contains mature content and depiction of a seventeen-year-old girl’s rape at the hands of another student. It is a chilling first person point of view account of something that occurs across the country at parties just like the one depicted in this story, and we wanted the fictional account to feel raw and as devastating. We also understand that these scenes may be difficult and uncomfortable for some. We recommend this novel for readers ages sixteen and older.

“I cried, praying for him to finish. I closed my eyes and tried to envision myself somewhere else… somewhere where I was happy. I thought of my family all piled around our tree on Christmas morning. I thought of singing with my band. I thought of Caitlin and me baking cookies and watching movies together. But after just a few seconds of pretending, Mike would hit me or thrust deeper, and I would be back in reality. I was being raped. I was all alone. I was a damsel in distress. And there was no one there to save me.”

Seventeen-year-old Stacey Lorenzo’s poor self-esteem has always consumed her. When significant weight loss leaves her still feeling powerless and with an eating disorder, she turns to partying to cope. Things go from bad ot worse when she is raped, a crushing blow to her psyche from which she may not recover. Stacey drugs, cuts, and hooks up with countless guys in an attempt to dull the pain. But if Stacey doesn’t find a way to face her demons and overcome her fears, she might find herself in a hole so dark, even love won’t be able to pull her out.

Barren is written by debut author Elizabeth Miceli. It is a devastating and dark account of one girl’s plummet to the very bottom of the human experience and the horrific and petrifying road to recovery and self-worth.

Fiery artist, Frankie Cain, hopes that her latest move to the East Coast would be her last. She’s been on the run for over twelve months, but can’t fight the feeling she’s never getting away from her powerful, abusive ex.

Hot, Fire Chief, Hardy Hanson, can’t resist a woman in need of a rescue, but when he collides head on with Frankie, he discovers she’s not the only one of them needing to be saved.

They must decide if allowing themselves to love is worth the risk, or will they let their past destroy any chance they have at finding peace.

Frankie
I stopped and faced the ocean bent over at the waist with my hands braced against my knees, feeling like a ton of bricks were pushing on my lungs.  I decided to just walk back and take it easy.  I took a few steps toward home and then heard him.  He was barely speaking above a whisper, but I could hear him like he was yelling in my ear.

“Tell me your name.”

I inhaled and wasn’t sure exhaling was in my future.  We had a good thing going, and now he had to go and ruin it by wanting to know my name.  Everything would change from this point on.  He was a man of honour.  He couldn’t know who I was and not tell someone.  It was the someones who could hurt me and I needed to do everything I could to avoid them finding me.  My name wasn’t exactly a household name, but in certain circles, it was known and more so, the man I was avoiding was pretty much known everywhere.

“I can’t tell you that, Hardy.”

He stared at me with emotions running wild across his face.  Like a slot machine they spun on until they landed on the winner.  Pain.  He slowly walked toward where I was rooted.  I couldn’t move if another hurricane force wind came upon us there and then.  I felt like if I broke our stare down, I would feel the pain of it for a really long time.

“Why?” he whispered.  I could hear him clearly now that he was standing just a foot in front of me.  “I need to hear it.  I need to know your name.”

“Why?”  I echoed his words back to him.  “Why does it matter?  What are we doing here, Hardy?  We’re just running.  That’s it.  We don’t need to know anything about each other, we just need to run.”

“How long are you just going to run, Red?  How long until you let me know you?  I’ve been here.  Every day for the past two weeks, running behind you, but I’m done with running behind you.”  He began to close the space between us until he was breathing my air.  “I’m done waiting for you to give me a piece of you.  I want it now.”  He lowered his voice and began to lean in.  “Give.  Me.  Your.  Name.”

I had huge personal space issues.  He was pushing every limit I had and it terrified me.  I felt a tear start to trickle down my face.  We were frozen, at a standstill.  One of us had to move first and I realized I was actually afraid his move would be to walk away.  Something woke up inside of me at that realization.  Being alone was beginning to be pretty damn lonely.

“Frances, but my friends call me Frankie.”  I whispered the words he was looking for and then I promptly turned and ran like the track star I once was, all the way back to the safety of my house.  Away from Hardy.

Excerpt

The girl put a hand on his shoulder. Her voice was low. “Whatever happens next. You mustn’t move.”

And then the ground underneath the horse exploded upward and a pale white form the size of a wagon erupted into the air. The horse let out a scream that turned into a wet gurgle as white writhing tentacles enveloped the animal. The copper tang of blood filled the air and Conbert felt his stomach lurch.

He thought to go for the sword he carried at his side but he saw the girl’s eyes.

He held himself still as another of the creatures breached the drowning grass. It was a huge mass of rippling white flesh, except at the front where the mouth opened like an exposed wound. Massive tearing fangs lined the pink maw, and white tentacles writhed from the worm’s throat, seeking the remnants of the thrashing horse. The two monsters tore the horse apart in seconds, powerful tentacles flaying meat from bone with horrific efficiency.

As the rendworms began to slide across the ground in their direction, Con felt a terror urging him to run. He fought against it, trying to focus instead on the perfect stillness of the young girl. The huge worms slid past them.

And then as Con held his breath, the girl moved.

The young cadet was fast and sure as she darted forward. She struck out with the mace, swinging it with both hands, and smashing it into the rendworm’s side. There was a loud crack, and Con knew that somewhere inside the sinuous horror a bone had broken under the blow.

Excerpt

I gave up on my hair and went to get dressed. I tugged on my khaki pants and navy sweater, which made up my glorious Hillcrest Academy uniform, (it was just my luck my school picked colors which made me look like a dead goldfish), grabbed my bag, and went to join the rest of my class lined up to go to the cafeteria. I was almost fourteen and yet had to walk to the lunchroom in a straight line like Madeline from the storybook. Stupid Hillcrest.

Lunch was my favorite part of the day. For one, it meant the school day was half over. I went through the lunch line and grabbed a ham sandwich, some chips, and a bottle of water and went to join my two best friends, Ericka Maines and Tori Robins. The lunchroom was always extra noisy on Fridays because everybody was talking about their plans for the weekend. Sometimes Ericka, Tori, and I went to a movie, but we didn’t do much else. Tori and I liked to go shopping, but Ericka’s parents thought hanging out at the mall would “morally corrupt” Ericka, blah, blah, blah. And they about had a stroke when she wanted to get a social media page. So I was surprised when Ericka said we should all go to the mall tomorrow.

“Landry, they’re having modeling tryouts to be on the American Ingénue show,” Ericka said, showing me the ad she had torn out of the Grand Rapids Press. “The Ingénue judges are trying to find local teens to compete on their reality show.”

I watched every second of the last show. Talisa Milan won and got a Little Rose cosmetics contract and was on this month’s cover of Bright and Lively magazine. She was also a host on Hot Videos Now, a music video show. Melani Parkington, the runner-up, was the new spokesperson for Bouncy Hair conditioner. You were almost guaranteed to be famous if you made it to the final round of the contest.

“First you have to win in your city, and then your state, and then the regional competition,” Tori read. “Then you get to the tough part of the competition where they vote off someone new each week on national TV.”

“It’s an amazing opportunity to get discovered,” Ericka said, checking out her reflection in her spoon.

“Yeah, except for the fact the judges are known to be brutal when they’re honest. Like when they told Melani her gorgeous face was too pinched, her forehead was too low, and her eyebrows were too high,” I said. “They also told one girl she was pretty, but her lips looked like she had walked into a sliding glass door.”

“Well, they did,” Ericka said shrugging. “The newspaper says the first fifty girls who try out got a free American Ingénue tote bag and Little Rose makeup samples.”

They were holding auditions at the Perry Mall, which was the smallest mall in Grand Rapids. There weren’t a lot of stores there, so you usually just saw old people mall walking around there. Still, it had a decent bookstore and a cute clothing store, so I said I’d go watch while they tried out.

“No, we’re all trying out,” Ericka said, grabbing the ad back from me. She said her mother thought she’d be a “natural” for the show since she always got the lead in the school plays. However, Ericka was usually the only one who tried out for the lead. Everyone else felt too stupid singing on stage in front of the whole school. Besides, you had to stay after school to rehearse, and I liked to go home and watch my favorite soap opera, As the Days Roll On.

“There’s no way I’m trying out,” I said. “They always make the girl stand on a platform while they tell her everything that’s wrong with her. Melani’s gorgeous, and they tore her apart. Besides, I don’t look anything like those girls on the show.”

I didn’t even buy makeup at the Little Rose cosmetics counter because I hated having the salespeople stare at my face to determine whether I was a summer gladiola or a spring daffodil.

“You’re tall,” Tori said. “Remember one judge wanted to kick Melani out for being too short.”

“Yeah, you’re practically the tallest girl in school,” Ericka said.

I was hoping Tori and Ericka would say I was so beyond gorgeous I was destined to be a model. Instead, they pointed out I was freakishly tall.

BOOK REVIEW

The Body Institute is a coming of age young adult book about being physically fit and discovering who you are. It tells the story of Morgan Dey, one of the top Reducers at the Institute. What I loved about this book is that it explores the youth’s current question of identity and deals with the problem of overweight and underweight. The premise of having mind-switching, though quite similar to Lissa Price’s Starters Duology, as a means of helping someone lose their weight and make them healthy got me hooked into reading this story! I always loved to see more books with body-mind-switching thingies because I wished it were possible. Kinda sounds like possession but I don’t know.

What I personally didn’t like about the book is that it was a little bit slow paced at first so I did put it down like twice. I was waiting for the big twist to happen and then boom! There were a LOT of them and they’re so mind-blowing I can’t even. Then the ending. THE ENDING. Was like . . . no, I’m so not satisfied with it. There needs to have a sequel announced. It needs to have one! I’m not done with this!
I also really love how the romance between our main character, Morgan and Matt. It’s really cute but I feel there could’ve been more to it.

The Body Institute is a smart, captivating and thrilling read for any sci-fi dystopian YA book lovers! I highly recommend this read!
